What triggers your desire to create? A sensation, an emotion, a memory?
It's more of a need than a desire. The need to do, the need to express something that wants to surface and that I'll become aware of once the drawing is there. The process can be more or less long.
And also the pleasure of playing with my color palettes.
What remains of your childlike perspective in your work today?
I draw a lot of inspiration from the fairy tales I read as a child, particularly those featuring animals that guide the heroes/heroines. In my eyes, they are teaching characters I dream of meeting to discover the mysteries of the world. And like a child, I continue to believe in them, for the pleasure of believing. My drawings are encounters with these magical animals.
You work with watercolor and pencil: what does this very tactile relationship to drawing bring you?
I work mainly with watercolor and pencil. I like the fine grain of the paper, the softness of the brush, the sensuality of the gesture, when the body takes over the creation and painting becomes a meditation.
What do you hope to convey with your creations? Or what kind of connection would you like people to forge with them?
With my creations, I want to provide a continuity of the reassuring image of animals. I want people to feel their comforting presence when they wear them. I create "comfort objects to take everywhere." It's up to each person to appropriate them and forge their own connection with them.
Why did you choose to bring your designs to life on silk squares?
I chose silk for its softness, lightness, and elegance.
I wanted to make squares because they represent values that are dear to me.
I remember those my mother would lend me to dress up or build forts. How beautiful she was with her scarf in her hair, how proud I was the day she gave me one of them. Now her granddaughters wear her scarves. The square is the transmission of femininity, beauty, play: squares (regardless of the material) are joy!
